carnarvon gorge

August 2022 brought about a highly anticipated trip for the family. We headed out to Carnarvon Gorge to meet up with my parents for a family camping trip. The gorge has always been on our to do list, but had been put on the back burner for a few years due to how far away it is and the limited amount of accommodation in the park.

The drive out to the park is roughly 9 hours from our home on Bribie Island and we chose to split it in two with an overnight stop in Roma on the way out. We booked in to camp at Sandstone Park which is a beautiful privately owned property. The camp ground is setup for self-contained campers and only has some very basic features on site. One feature that is worth mentioning is they offer kennels so hikers are able to leave their dogs when they head off into the national park. My parents chose to stay at the Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge which is located a little closer to the entry of the park. It features some really nice glamping style tents and sure came in handy for us to be able to have a quick shower on our way back to our camp after some long days on the trails.

We had such an epic time out at Carnarvon Gorge and are already planning to get out there again. We loved the different scenery that Queenslands Central Highlands has to offer and cannot wait to explore it more. Below is a video from the trip.
